1-9 Newport Street, London

Details of balcony unit required to third floor level.

At 11.150 metres long and 2.000 metres wide, the precast balcony incorporates 120No. clear glass blocks, 5No. bespoke fabricated steel support brackets, 60No. horizontal s/steel handrail channels and an integral rainwater gully with out let pipe, all cast into the unit at the works.

This precast concrete balcony slab represented a significant one-piece cast, frought with production issues.

Destined for inclusion onto the third floor of the outside of the new art gallery and give the impression of a floating slab with no visible means of support, the balcony presents some serious consideration.

Weighing upwards of 13 tonnes the balcony will be produced face down in the mould to ensure the best cast face, then rotated upon its long axis for finishing, prior to the further complexities of transportation and safe installation.

Pictured above is the timber mould from which the balcony will be cast. Recessed into the mould base are the location rebates for each of the glass blocks. The tapering soffit shutter boxes will be suspended on gantries from the top of the mould.

The mould has been produced by Marlin Moulds Ltd. www.marlinmoulds.co.uk
